I Am Not An Automaton

I had every intention of going back to the pool today but then I didn't.   Turns out that was a good thing because the upper body strength training from Monday coupled with yesterday's swim made today's upper body strength training exponentially more difficult than it has been.
The real workout today was walking.  I hereby pledge to walk with a normal gait without limping.  I can do it, albeit very slowly and with no small amount of effort.  When I threw out my back several years ago the doctor I wound up liking said that for the first couple of days after an injury you want to give it a lot of rest, but after that you want to return to activity that's not painful as soon as possible (actually with the back it didn't matter how much it hurt but that's another story).  Using a brace when you don't need one contributes to atrophy and will make your recovery time longer.  I'm not a doctor and my PT may end up giving me other advice, but for the moment that makes sense to me.  I can walk and do a few stairs normally without pain so I probably should do those things.  On the other hand,  having to really think about walking is ultimately exhausting, hence my general lack of interest in the pool.  Also, it's been difficult to do my regular stretching but today I found it necessary to explore what was possible.  My calves are like rocks.
That's all I got today.
