So Wild West Showdown was ages ago and I didn't ever get around to writing about it. Basically I like going to tournaments because it's so instructive to see how other teams play, which strategies they use, what works and what doesn't. There were a lot of very exciting games and great players there, and the Bombers won all their games, which is nice to see.
All that aside, I have to admit that the thing I really learned was this: Wear shin guards. I started wearing shin guards during scrimmage about a month ago because I was really tired of having black and blue shins. I was a little afraid of looking like a pansy. They're hot. A lot of people claim that they don't get kicked in the shins. Nevertheless it seemed like the way to go and no one really commented on them one way or the other.
At WWS a friend of mine emerged from a pile up, skated the remainder of the jam and upon its conclusion did a baseball slide into the EMTs. I figured she had taken a particularly bad kick and didn't think much of it. Two jams later the game was stopped and said EMTs started walking around the track with medical gloves cleaning up blood. I glanced over at my friend and her face was a shade of red I had not seen before. Cheering ensued. During halftime another skater on our team rolled over and inquired as to our level of morbidity. She must have been satisfied with our response because she proceeded to show us a photo of the injury on her phone. My friend had two giant gashes on her shin. One probably measured four inches by one inch with the other being somewhat smaller. I'm not a medical professional but I thought I saw bone. I would repost them here but they're pretty gruesome and it's not my leg. Another players trucks were the apparent culprit.
Yup. Shin guards are the new black.
