League Practice
Today was about an hour of meeting and an hour of skating. It was really great to see some of what exactly goes into a bout, which reminds me: Jet City's season opener is this Saturday! Go here for your ticket: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/215189
Basically one thing stuck out in my mind. The venue seats 1800 and they're expecting to sell out. I know. don't do derby for the glory. Actually I have no idea what it's like to play a sport in front of that many people. During my high school swim team days the most heavily attended meet I swam was in Havre, Montana. You can find it on a map just north of nowhere. The pool may have had seating for 200 and when you're swimming, 200 people cheering sounds a lot like rushing water. There may have been more people than that watching when I ran my marathon, but let's face it: cheering for a marathon is not a particularly stimulating activity, much though I appreciated the people who were willing to do it, especially the guy spraying people with a hose. So. 1800 people. I wonder what that will feel like when I start bouting...
In other news, I managed to ignore the fact that I ate it while sprinting (on my feet not my skates) yesterday at practice for a full 24 hours before having that fact brought to my attention again today. I was really hoping that no one had noticed. Really this just goes to show that if you're clumsy when you're born you'll be clumsy when you die, no matter how much time you spend on a balance board.
The short amount of time we did skate today was perfect. I worked on hitting with a friend. We were hitting each other out and then both doing a turn around toe stop. The idea is to do your turn around toe stop so that you turn in the direction of the track. The person who was hit out has to come back in behind the person who did the hitting and that person wants to stop asap to make sure the girl she hit out comes in behind as many people as possible.
I was pleased to discover that my turn around toe stop on the outside (my weak side) was just there for me. I know my body knows how to do it, but I have been freezing when I need to use it. Today there was no freeze. I'm sure it will still need work, but this is what the turning point (so to speak) felt like on the other side so there's hope after all.
