When you break in new skates they have a tendency to wreak havoc on your feet. When I bought mine I was told that duct tape was a good way to prevent blisters:
This is totally adorable in retrospect. Not just because it's cute but also because it was absolutely ineffective. it sweats off and then rubs around in your skate, plus I'm sensitive to adhesives. Now I do this:
I got the big toe cover from a ballerina store. It's designed for toe shoes. Trust me, you don't want to see what's underneath it. I also tape cushy ballerina stuff where my foot pushes against my speed counter. The best part about this, though, has been the EZeefit bootie for my ankle. It's like kevlar for your feet.

SPEED SKATING
Lots of derby people tonight! I elected not to push overly hard this evening due to the fact that last week on Wednesday I couldn't move after Tuesday speed skating and I need to look fairly decent for team practice tomorrow. I've decided that going faster develops it's own sort of rhythm. You get so you feel comfortable crossing all the way around the turns, then you get faster, then you feel like you're going to spin out on the turns and quit moving your feet. Repeat. I have to readjust every time I speed up. I'm currently in that, 'oh shit' part where it feels like I can't cross out of that first cone. I think it's just a matter of trusting my weight is in the right place.
