Today was a good day to learn about knees. The most important thing was that the knee felt much better today. I had a rather embarrassing incident yesterday where it took 20 minutes to remove my left shoe. After that Vicodin seemed like an appropriate solution for both the increased pain and the internal note that this was probably one of those times where a significant other would be useful. Today no Vicodin was necessary. I can now flush a public toilet using my left foot. This was not possible yesterday.
I was able to see a doctor who specializes in knees and has treated lots of other derby players. He did a lot of the same pushing and prodding the ER docs did on Saturday but this time refrained from continuing to push after I started gasping from the pain. He would like to push on it again in a few days, after the knee is less sensitive, before making a diagnosis. He seems to think the injury is to my PCL not my ACL and that even if the PCL is torn, no surgery would be necessary. I am OK with this diagnosis.
As OK as I am with this diagnosis, I'm going to try and see one more doctor this week. A friend of mine says she always tries to get a second opinion when it comes to her knees - even if she likes the first doctor. I hate doing that kind of thing because it's a pain in the ass, but I know she's right. Also, I would prefer to avoid getting the MRI. It's expensive. If I were in a lot more pain or exhibited more classic signs of ACL damage (swelling, a loud pop at the time of impact) then I would pay whatever for the MRI. However, in this case I'm not sure that it's strictly necessary and I could sure use the $1,300 (after insurance) for other things.
In the meantime I'm taking a lot of comfort in the knowledge that the joint feels much less painful in general and I have a ton more movement today than yesterday. Still, walking for more than a few blocks isn't exactly comfortable. It could be some time before I'm back on skates. In the meantime I've decided to focus on two things for derby: 1.) Memorizing the rules 2.) Having an awesome upper body.
